Just slightly crush the sides of the can and insert it; it's neat and tidy.

Works well, seems much more solid than the one I had before where the compression bar bent. I'm removing 1 star because I would like it to crush even smaller. The can still measures 4 cm after crushing. Received in 10 days just before Christmas.
